My stay has been wonderfully relaxing in Sutersville, Pennsylvania with my brother. Lots of sleep. Lots of tvs – horse races on TV, Fox News updates, and foreign language subtitled films as well as Jeopardy with Alex Trebek (of course!).

Sutersville, an East Coast small town of roughly 1,000 inhabitants, offers poker as a regular offering through our volunteer Fire Department’s weekly tournament at their fire hall. Unfortunately, there was no tournament last Friday because Christmas fell on that date but I plan on participating this time around; should be fun.
Playing in your local poker tournament offers unique benefits: knowing all the people, from drinkers to blowhards to bluffers – knowing them well means they are likely to stick with similar styles for most events and you can rely on this knowing which way they may swing!
Tournaments offer great food that’s homemade, plentiful, and delectable – you can count on that at these tournaments!
My entry fee will be 80 dollars and I have set aside $160 in preparation for the tournament, anticipating it may take me at least that amount to reach the money. These tournaments typically award anywhere from five to seven winners.
Skillwise, my hometown poker players are pretty adept. They tend to be aggressive but know when and how to tighten down. Furthermore, they quickly identify loose players.
I will play a position against these people. That means if I find myself in a late position without raising, and the flop comes up without one being made, then I may take a risk to have an opportunity at winning an impressive pot. Sometimes taking risks pays off big!
Make no mistake about it – I will always play almost any two cards behind the button and if any other players check, watch out because that means I may rush in for the pot!
As always, I will pay close attention to how other players behave at my table. They might not say much but what they do reveal can often be telling – some may wager after any raise while some won’t invest any chips before seeing a flop – take care when picking players to work with!
As I accumulate chips, my game becomes more aggressive. Doyle Brunson refers to this process as shifting gears: switching from aggressive to passive and then aggressive again in poker is what keeps opponents on edge and keeps you within range for victory.
